"We must Implement Reforms"
The Northwoods’ congressman says there are no cuts coming to Medicaid. But Tom Tiffany said there are “common sense” reforms including in the latest Republican spending package.
Democrats on Capitol Hill are accusing Republicans in Congress of looking to cut millions of dollars from BadgerCare that currently help women, children, and the disabled.
"Medicaid cannot be raided to pay for tax cuts for billionaires," Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin said on Twitter.
Baldwin added that the Republican plan would mean "grandparents kicked off healthcare, senior living homes closing, and higher costs for seniors on a fixed income."
Tiffany said none of that is true.
"Medicaid should be preserved for the most vulnerable – the disabled, pregnant women, single mothers, and low-income children. To protect the program, we must implement reforms to root out fraud, enforce work requirements for able-bodied, childless adults, and ensure benefits do not go to illegal aliens,” Tiffany said.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has said he’s looking at a work requirement that would ask able-bodied people on Medicaid to work, or volunteer, to get job training for at least 20 hours a week.
It’s similar to the plan that Wisconsin Republicans have asked Gov. Tony Evers for for years.
Tiffany said requiring people who can work to work, and ending benefits for people who are in this country illegally are both very popular.
“Wisconsin voters overwhelmingly support these measures, and with over half a trillion dollars in improper Medicaid payments over the past decade, they are just common sense,” Tiffany said. “Republicans are committed to safeguarding Medicaid, so it remains a lifeline for those who need it.”
