Brad Schimel: Expensive Supreme Court Race an Admission of High Stakes

The Wisconsin Democracy Campaign first reported on Tuesday that the total cost of the race between Schimel and Crawford is now over $18 million.

Wisconsin's $20 Million Supreme Court Race

Wisconsin’s race for the Supreme Court is closing-in on the $20 million mark, but one of the candidates says it’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Conservative Judge Brad Schimel said the money that is pouring into his race against Susan Crawford is a confirmation of the stakes in the race.

“In 2023, for that election, Janet Protasiewicz got almost $10 million from out-of-state billionaires. Dan Kelly didn’t get any of that money. This time around, it's going to be more evened-out because now conservatives across America are recognizing the power of the Wisconsin Supreme Court,” Schimel explained Wednesday. “The [high court] can influence who wins a presidential race, they can influence who wins the United States Senate.”

Schimel then accused Crawford of promising donors that she will strike down Wisconsin’s Congressional maps, and likely flip two seats currently held by Republicans.

“She said the quiet part out loud,” Schimel added.

Crawford continues to deny that she has promised anyone anything.

The Wisconsin Democracy Campaign first reported on Tuesday that the total cost of the race between Schimel and Crawford is now over $18 million.

“According to their most recent campaign finance reports, the Wisconsin Supreme Court candidates have already spent a combined $6.84 million, far exceeding the $1.76 million spent approaching a 4-way primary in the record-breaking 2023 Wisconsin Supreme Court race,” the Democracy Campaign reported. “Additionally, 12 independent expenditure committees have reported spending more than $11.5 million to date in opposition and support of the two candidates.”

Fair Courts America is the biggest spending outside group, with over $2.5 million spent already. They're followed by America PAC at $2.27 million, and Building America’s Future with $2.03 million spent. The Democracy campaign says all three are either pro-Schimel, or anti-Crawford groups.

Voters will decide in the race between Schimel and Crawford in April.
