Bangstad Throws Hat in the Ring for Governor
Kirk Bangstad is looking to turn his new, national attention into a campaign.
Bangstad said over the weekend that he is running for governor as a Democrat.
“I’m not going to stand for this anymore,” Bangstad said during the livestream. “Even if I lose, at least I’m part of the conversation.”
Bangstad has been at the center of the national conversation after he took to social media to criticize the third person who tried to kill President Trump.
“Well, we almost got #freebeerday. Either a brother or sister in the Resistance needs to work on their marksmanship or he faked another assassination to get a positive news cycle. We’ll never know. Regardless, we stand at the ready to pour free beer the day it happens,” Bangstad wrote after the latest attempt on the president’s life.
Bangstad said he spoke with the Secret Service about the post. It was after that interview that he decided to run.
Bangstad has long been a major Democratic donor. His superPAC has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in recent elections, including support for other candidates Mandela Barnes and Francesca Hong.
Bangstad said he plans to make “protecting democracy and voting rights” the central theme of his campaign.
Bangstad will need to collect 1,500 signatures by the end of next week to make the ballot for the August primary. If he does, he’d be the eighth Democrat running in the race.
