Tyler August on the Surplus Deal
The second in command for Republicans in the State Assembly says there are enough votes to move the new tax deal with Gov. Evers forward.
Rep. Tyler August, R-Walworth, said during an interview on News Talk 1130 WISN that Assembly Republicans will back the $1.8 billion deal when it comes-up for a vote on Wednesday.
“Our caucus is ready to move forward with this. We had a great conversation about it over the last couple of days. Our members understand how important this is to get this money back to the people who overpaid via all these different tax cuts in the plan,” August said.
August is less certain, however, about the State Senate.
“I have been speaking with Leader LeMahieu, and he’s confident that he will have the votes tomorrow afternoon,” August added. “We'll continue talking to Devin, but I'm confident that he's going to be able to pull it together.”
But LeMahieu and Senate Republicans have already lost one vote.
Sen. Steve Nass, R-Whitewater, on Monday said he is a No vote on the plan.
“I can’t support another bad deal cut by leaders that will never face the voters again,” Nass said in a statement.
That could mean Senate Democrats will need to vote for the plan. But Senate Democratic leader Dianne Hesselbein on Monday said she doesn’t support the plan.
"From my perspective, there is no deal: Three men who will not be in elected office next year have come up with this proposal which Senate Democrats will be reviewing," Hesselbein said in a statement.
August said getting Democratic votes is a test of leadership for the governor.
“It will be interesting to watch and see who's actually the leader of the Democrat Party,” August said. “They are in complete disarray. They're angry at each other. And we'll have to sit back and get the popcorn ready, and see how they're going to operate.”
