Another Lawmaker Pushes for Answers About Eau Claire Professor

Knodl said the university must take “decisive” action.

Dan Knodl Condemns Eau Claire Professor

There is another call for answers from the University of Wisconsin about the professor on the Eau Claire campus who’s accused of flipping the College Republicans’ table on Election Day.

Rep. Dan Knodl, R-Butler, on Monday wrote a letter to UW-Eau Claire chancellor Jame Schimidt demanding action.

“I am writing to express my full support for the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire College Republicans and to condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the abhorrent behavior of UWEC faculty member and English Department Chair José Felipe Alvergue on Election Day,” Knodl wrote.

Campus police cited Alvergue after the head of the UW-EC College Republicans said he violently flipped her table, then walked away.

The university immediately placed Alvergue on leave, and launched an investigation.

“UW-Eau Claire strongly supports every person’s right to free speech and free expression, and the university remains committed to ensuring that campus is a place where a wide variety of opinions and beliefs can be shared and celebrated,” the university’s interim provost said in a statement.

Late last week, UW-Eau Claire removed Alvergue from his position at the head of the English Department.

Knodl said that’s not enough.

“The University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire has an obligation to foster an environment in which all students, regardless of political affiliation, feel safe and supported in expressing their views. When a professor physically disrupts a student organization’s lawful and peaceful activity based solely on political disagreement, the university must respond decisively,” Knodl wrote in his letter. Last week, two other lawmakers Rep. Dave Maxey, R-New Berlin,Rep. Scott Krug, R-Rome, also slammed Alvergue and the UW.

Knodl said the university must take “decisive” action.

“It is time for the university to demonstrate its commitment to fairness and to make clear that political violence, regardless of the target or source, will not be tolerated on its campus,” he added.
