Wisconsin Senate President Promises Hard Look at “Reforms” after MPS Audit

Sen. Felzkowski said her concern is not just that MPS is a mess, or just that MPS is failing its kids.

Sen. Felzkowski Looking at MPS Reforms

Wisconsin’s senate president says the recent scathing audit of Milwaukee Public Schools’ central office is begging for a response from lawmakers in Madison.

Sen. Mary Felzkowski, R-Tomahawk, on Thursday said the audit ordered by Gov. Tony Evers uncovered years of problems, years of failures, and years of damage from a broken culture in Wisconsin’s largest school district.

“I find it incredibly problematic that the audit revealed years of incompetence among MPS leadership and administration,” Felzkowski said. “It is shameful that this was going on behind the scenes while a massive, clearly dishonest referendum was forced through and now siphons money from every single school district in the state.”

The audit detailed a “lack of honesty and transparency,” and a “culture of fear.”

Sen. Felzkowski said her concern is not just that MPS is a mess, or just that MPS is failing its kids.

Felzkowski explained the MPS’ financial failures are costing other schools across Wisconsin serious money.

“MPS’ failed governance and subsequent actions are of statewide concern,” her office explained in a statement. “ For example, the Tomahawk School District will see a 17.4% drop in equalization aid as a direct result of MPS’ actions.”

Gov. Tony Evers on Thursday called the audit a “critical next step for getting MPS back on track.” He also promised Milwaukee Public Schools $3 million to implement the nearly 30 recommendations in the new audit.

Felzkowski said she has other ideas.

“As educational achievement in Milwaukee continues to fall, and we now find out what has been happening behind the scenes, the Legislature will be taking a hard look at reform,” she said.
