Slow Processing of Food Stamp Benefits
It could be a while before people in Wisconsin see their November food stamp benefits.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Monday said it will take weeks to process the partial payment ordered by the Trump Administration “Due to the many steps that need to be taken, as well as the likely bottleneck of only having two vendors that can deploy benefits to cards,” DHS said in a statement.
DHS added the bottleneck will delay benefits for “weeks if not months.”
DHS said the next steps include:
There are nearly 700,000 people on food stamps in Wisconsin. In all, the state spends nearly $15 million per-month on their benefits.
Gov. Evers on Friday declared a state of emergency over the loss of those benefits, but his order doesn’t mean anything for people who didn’t get anything on the first of the month.
Wisconsin Republican Congressman Bryan Steil said the quickest way to restore food stamp benefits is for Democrats to vote to reopen the government.
If the government reopens, Steil said, it would be “near instantaneous” that benefits are restored.
