Senator Ron Johnson Calls Raid on Wausau Mayor’s Home “Danger to Democracy”

“Democrats are the danger to our democracy,” Se. Ron Johnson wrote on Twitter. “Case closed.”

Wisconsin’s Republican U.S. Senator is blasting the reported raid on Wausau’s mayor.

Senator Ron Johnson took to Twitter on Friday to slam the Wisconsin Attorney General’s Office for its investigation into Mayor Doug Diny, and his decision to remove Wausau’s ballot drop box.

“These are the actions of jack-booted thugs,” Johnson wrote on Twitter.

Matt Kittle broke the story for The Federalist, reporting that Kaul’s Department of Justice raided Diny’s home last week.

“The raid took place Wednesday afternoon, according to a source with information on the stunning law enforcement operation. The source, who asked not to be identified because of the developing nature of the case, tells The Federalist that law enforcement officials took cell phones and other electronic devices supposedly relevant to the investigation. That included Diny’s wife’s cell phone, the source said,” Kittle reported.

Johnson said the raid is another example of just how far Democratic leaders will go to intimidate their political opponents.

“Democrats are the danger to our democracy,” he wrote on Twitter. “Case closed.”

Diny made national headlines when he removed Wausau’s ballot drop box back in September. He said at the time that the box, which was outside of city hall, was not secure.

He carted it off and placed it inside city hall.

Diny claimed he did nothing wrong because Wisconsin doesn’t have any laws that deal with ballot drop boxes.

Wisconsin’s liberal-majority Supreme Court ruled over the summer that while Wisconsin law doesn’t specifically allow for ballot drop boxes, the state also doesn’t explicitly ban them. The liberal court said communities can use drop boxes for the November election. But any laws regarding ballot drop box use, security, and who controls them remains missing.

Wausau’s city clerk eventually returned the city’s drop box to the front of city hall, and it’s been there ever since.

Kaul’s investigation is one of two into Diny’s removal of the drop box. It’s not clear whether the Portage County Sheriff’s Office, which is the other investigator, took part in the raid on Diny’s home.
