The lawmaker who’s led Wisconsin’s charge to keep girls sports for girls is declaring victory.
The WIAA, the group that runs high school sports in Wisconsin, on Wednesday said it is falling in line with President Trump’s new order that will keep biological males out of sports for biological girls.
"Today the WIAA Board of Control voted to update the organization's policy regarding student-athlete eligibility – affirming its compliance with federal directives that only students designated as females at birth will be allowed to participate in girls competitions,” WIAA executive director Stephanie Hauser said in a statement. "Working in consultation with legal counsel, our Board updated this policy to ensure clarity is provided to our membership as they work to comply with new federal guidance from the White House.”
Rep. Barb Dittrich, R-Oconomowoc, simply said on X Wednesday “VICTORY!!!”
Dittrich has sponsored legislation that would have kept boys out of girls sports in the state. Her plan passed both through the Assembly and the senate last year, only to see Gov. Tony Evers veto it. ‘
“This type of legislation, and the harmful rhetoric beget by pursuing it, harms LGBTQ Wisconsinites’ and kids’ mental health, emboldens anti-LGBTQ harassment, bullying, and violence, and threatens the safety and dignity of LGBTQ Wisconsinites, especially our LGBTQ kids,” Evers said in his veto message.
The WIAA’s new policy does not fully ban boys from girls sports.
The new policy allows boys to practice with the girls, just not “compete.”
Dittrich did not say anything about that provision.
It’s not clear how many, if any, boys are playing girls sports in Wisconsin.
Dittrich has said in the past she was told as many as six boys wanted to play on girls’ teams in the state. But the WIAA never provided a firm number.
