Milwaukee Judge Hannah Dugan Arrested
It was an afternoon of protests and statements of outrage from the Milwaukee County Courthouse after the FBI arrested a Milwaukee judge accused of helping an illegal immigrant criminal try to avoid arrest.
A small group of protesters chanted “No justice, No peace, Let the judge be released” outside the courthouse about 1 pm Friday.
Earlier Friday morning the FBI announced that agents arrested Circuit Court Judge Hannah Dugan on felony charges of obstruction and concealing an individual.
Prosecutors say Dugan confronted two ICE agents and an FBI agent outside of her courtroom last Friday, yelled at them, then sent them to Milwaukee County’s chief judge to present their warrant.
While the agents were away, prosecutors say Dugan snuck the immigrant, later identified as Eduardo Flores-Ruiz from Mexico, through her chambers, into a back hallway, and told them to leave the courthouse to avoid ICE.
Dugan said nothing at her court appearance early Friday afternoon.
Her attorney, however, said the judge "wholeheartedly regrets and protests her arrest. It was not made in the interest of public safety."
Democrats from Milwaukee immediately called-out the Trump Administration for ordering Dugan’s arrest.
“We continue to stand with Judge Dugan against yet another authoritarian attempt to silence dissent, punish dissenters, and intimidate everyone else from ever joining them,” Rep. Ryan Clancy, D-Milwaukee, wrote on Twitter. “Obstructing fascism is our duty, not a crime.”
“We must all stand united against the authoritarian impulses and actions of the Trump Administration,” Milwaukee County Supervisor Jack Eckblad added in a statement. “Judge Dugan’s example is a testament to our ability to insist on our rights, and history will see her as a champion of our democracy. Judge Dugan should be released immediately.”
Attorney General Pam Bondi said on Fox News that Dugan helped a once-deported illegal immigrant accused of violent domestic abuse try to escape justice.
