Rep. Clancy Defends Judge Housing Illegal Immigrant
One of Milwaukee’s most progressive state lawmakers is applauding the county judge who is accused of trying to hide an illegal immigrant from ICE.
State Rep. Ryan Clancy, D-Milwaukee, says he stands with Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan and her actions last week.
“I commend Judge Hannah Dugan’s defense of due process by preventing ICE from shamefully using her courtroom as an ad hoc holding area for deportations," Clancy said in a statement.
The FBI is investigating whether Dugan tried to help a Mexican national who is charged with battery evade Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at the Milwaukee County Courthouse.
It remains unclear just what Dugan may have done, though WISN host Dan O’Donnell suggested that Dugan allowed the suspect to hide in a different room.
“While the facts in this case are still unfolding, it’s clear that actions like Judge Dugan’s are what is required for democracy to survive the Trump Regime,” Clancy added. “She used her position of power and privilege to protect someone from an agency that has repeatedly, flagrantly abused its own power.”
Immigration officials on Thursday said they eventually did arrest the man they were looking for. He’s been identified as 30-year-old Eduardo Flores-Ruiz. He's from Mexico and he was in court to answer misdemeanor battery charges.
“We cannot have a functional legal system if people are justifiably afraid to show up for legal proceedings, especially when ICE agents have already repeatedly grabbed people off the street in retaliation for speech and free association, without even obtaining the proper warrants,” Clancy said. “If enough of us act similarly, and strategically, we can stand with our neighbors and build a better world together.”
Dugan’s action, whatever they were, come as many Milwaukee County leaders debate how to handle ICE arrests inside the courthouse.
