Tiffany Requests Federal Offices Leave Dane County
There’s a request to get the federal government out of Dane County.
Northwoods Congressman Tom Tiffany on Tuesday wrote a letter to Elon Musk and the new Department of Government Efficiency, asking to move as many government offices as possible out of “sanctuary counties.”
“Recent news reports indicate that the Small Business Administration (SBA) has elected to move out of its regional Causeway Street office in Boston, a so-called ‘sanctuary city,’ and relocate to an area that ‘complies with federal immigration law,’” Tiffany wrote. “SBA will reportedly be taking similar steps in New York City, Denver, Chicago, Atlanta, and Seattle for the same reason. I am writing to ask that you consider applying this precedent, where feasible, to other agencies across the United States.”
That includes Dane County in Wisconsin.
“Like the aforementioned jurisdictions, Dane County is classified as ‘non-cooperative’ by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), meaning they do not accept Immigration Detainers,” Tiffany added.
The Trump Administration last week announced plans to close dozens and dozens of federal offices across the country.
Tiffany did not say if any of those offices are here in Wisconsin.
Instead, his letter laid-out a case against Dane County’s history of opposing President Trump.
“You may also be interested to know that among Wisconsin’s 72 counties, Dane was the only county to reject a 2024 ballot measure designed to prohibit non-citizen voting. This statewide referendum was approved by a more than 2-to-1 margin, 70.5% to 29.5%,” Tiffany wrote. “Given this fact, I am confident you will have little difficulty identifying other jurisdictions in our state committed to complying with federal immigration law that would be happy to host these agencies, including many in my congressional district.”
