Tom Tiffany asks for Investigation by DOJ
One of Wisconsin’s congressmen is waiting for a meeting with the Attorney General about Gov. Tony Evers’ non-cooperation policy with ICE.
Northwoods Congressman Tom Tiffany on Tuesday said he has written to Attorney General Pam Bondi’s office, informing her of the governor’s defiant stance.
“It’s clear that Governor Evers needs to be investigated by the DOJ for sidestepping the law,” Tiffany said. “And I am hoping Attorney General Bondi will take action and hold him accountable for blocking ICE from doing their job.”
Tiffany’s letter to Bondi came on the same day the News Talk 1130 WISN’s Dan O’Donnell broke the story about a Department of Administration email that warned state employees not to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement if they show-up at state office buildings.
“Do not answer questions, including when an agent asks about someone you know or presents a warrant with an individual name,” the email from DOA deputy secretary Anne Hanson stated.
The email also came with a warning.
“Remember that every state employee has a duty to protect confidential data and information collected or maintained by the state of Wisconsin in State offices and electronic filing systems. Because of this, state employees may not Grant ice or another agent access to any such data or information absent authorization from their legal counsel pursuant to a valid judicial warrant,” the email added.
Tiffany said he is waiting for an official response from Bondi, but is hoping to schedule a meeting on Wisconsin’s policy next week.
Meanwhile, Wisconsin lawmakers are asking questions of their own.
“The bigger problem with what the governor is telling state employees to do here, is that it shows just how extreme Democrats are on the issue of immigration,” Assembly Majority Leader Tyler August told reporters at the Capitol.
August said the governor’s policy is “dangerous,” and sends a dangerous signal to illegal immigrants.
