DPI's Jill Underly Called Before Legislature
Jill Underly is going to face more questions from Wisconsin lawmakers.
Sen. Jon Jagler, R-Watertown, said Underly’s absence from Thursday’s hearing in front of an Assembly panel was inexcusable. He is promising to hold a hearing in his Senate Committee on Education in about two weeks to ask the questions Underly avoided.
“We will be holding another hearing, giving her an opportunity to come to the Capitol, to come to this building, and answer these questions before the Senate Education Committee,” Jagler said. “We will be holding this hearing on November 4th. An informational hearing. It'll be invited speakers only. With only one invited speaker, Jill Underly.”
Underly chose to go to her alma mater, Indiana University, on Thursday to receive an award. That angered lawmakers.
But so has Underly’s general silence to other questions from lawmakers, Jagler said. He said Underly has a long history of ignoring the legislature.
"Dr. Underly has never come before our committee. Not once on any other issue that we've had. Important issues that we've talked about,” Jagler added. “When it came to lowering the school standards we had a bill on that, she sent her deputy superintendent instead.”
Jagler said he has one central question that he expects Underly to be able to answer.
“She needs to come to answer this question from us: When is this a priority? Why wasn't it a priority before? If it was a priority, keeping kids safe, before how come you didn't come out to us during any of the budget process? How come you didn't come to me in an informal setting and say ‘Hey, we need this tightened-up. We need that tightened-up. We need to get these people out of the classrooms and away from our kids.’ Why haven't you done that before?”
Underly has been relatively silent about The Cap Times investigation that revealed 200 teachers have been investigated in Wisconsin for grooming or sexual misconduct, and some of them were allowed to continue teaching.
