David Maas: Conservative Judges Should Respect Constitution, Legislature

Maas said while voters do ask who is the conservative in the race, politics should not be a part of a judge's day-to-day job.

Waukesha Court Race: "Who's The Conservative?"

The central question in the race for Waukesha County judge is “who is the conservative?”

Both David Maas and Bridget Schoenborn say they are.

Maas was on News Talk 1130 WISN on Wednesday, and claimed his conservative bona fides.

"I think it's clear that I have conservative values,” Maas said. “I'm backed by very known conservatives here in Waukesha County, including Brad Schimmel himself, and in contrast to my opponent I think there are a lot of red flags that voters frankly should be quite concerned about .”

Maas said the biggest concern is that Judge Shoenborn was appointed by Gov. Evers, and has listed Judge Lynn Adleman as someone she admires.

Maas admitted that he also submitted his name to Gov. Evers for the same open seat on the bench that Schoenborn got. He claimed politics may have played a role in that as well.

But, Maas said while voters do ask who is the conservative in the race, politics should not be a part of a judge's day-to-day job.

"If you're doing the job correctly, those political views are not influencing your decisions on the bench. That's at the core of the conservative judicial philosophy,” Maas explained. It's respect for the branches of government, it's respect for the legislature and the laws they pass, it's respect for the Constitution at its heart.”

Maas said voters can look at his time as a prosecutor in Brad Schimel's Department of Justice, or his time as assistant D.A. in Fond du Lac, particularly his record handling sexual abuse cases, to get a sense of where he stands on crime.

Maas said it's crucial that voters know who they are choosing when they go to the polls on April 1st, adding that voters will be picking someone as judge who'll serve for at least six straight years.

Schoenborn is scheduled to be on News Talk 1130 WISN Thursday. We’ll have a story on her view on the race after her interview.
