"My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination..."
This afternoon at 12:46 PM on July 21st, President Joe Biden announced that he will not be seeking re-election.
He posted the following letter on X to summarize his administration's achievements and to announce his retirement:
"Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party..."
In another post shortly after, Joe Biden gave his endorsement to Vice President Kamala Harris:
Harris has since also received the endorsements of Bill and Hillary Clinton...
The Rumors Were True
On Friday, the MacIver Institute reported that the story relayed by Mark Halperin of Newsmax turned out to be a planned "leak" by establishment Democrats, and was subsequently discredited as misinformation.
We now know that the report given by Mark Halperin was, in fact, accurate.
Claims to the contrary were likely attempts to keep Biden's announcement a secret until the Biden administration was ready to formally announce Joe Biden's retirement.
However, it is yet unclear whether President Biden is aware of this announcement, which was definitely made by his White House staff. A press conference and video announcement featuring Biden is expected to be made later this week.
