From the Sheboygan Press – City of Sheboygan explores making workers pay higher health insurance premiums

The city of Sheboygan is now looking to save money by having workers contribute a larger share of their health insurance premiums starting in 2014-15. Currently, the city pays 88 percent of the premium for individual and family plans compared to national averages of 82 percent for an individual plan and 72 percent for a family plan. Paying such a large share of contributions has been costly to the taxpayers.

Last year, the individual health plan available to employees cost $3,229 more than the national average while family plans were $5,031 more than the national average. Due to the current plan’s expense, the city is also looking at redesigning their healthcare plan and seeing what options might be available on the new federal healthcare exchanges.
