Focus on Mining at State of State

[Madison, Wisc…] Governor Scott Walker laid out his agenda at his State of the State address on Tuesday, focusing entirely on creating jobs. He asked the legislature not to become distracted with other issues.

The immediate task is to create a new mining law, which will allow a company to mine iron ore in northern Wisconsin and create thousands of jobs in the process. Republicans are on board with that goal, but Democrats are fiercely opposed to it.

Republicans control both chambers of the legislature and hope to have a bill passed within the next couple of months.

Democrats, in their response to the address, said it would take seven years to create any jobs with a mining law. They say it would be far more effective to invest in K-12 education.
