Citizen Action Feigns Concern for Wisconsin Taxpayers in Tax Day Stunt

[Madison, Wisc…] Brett Healy, President of the John K. MacIver Institute for Public Policy, released the following statement after Citizen Action of Wisconsin held a press conference at Milwaukee’s downtown Post Office promoting bigger government and more federal debt:

“I wish I could say it was unbelievable that Citizen Action of Wisconsin would mock the hard-working taxpayers of our state, but this is nothing new for them. What does surprise me is that they are willing to blatantly lie to do it.

“Citizen Action cannot fool the taxpayers of this state. Wisconsin taxpayers know it really doesn’t matter which level of government – federal, state or local – is taking their hard-earned money, taxes are taxes. Wisconsinites are all paying taxes from one source, their checkbook.

“So, it is disingenuous for Citizen Action to advocate for a dramatic increase in spending for a federal program when the federal government is $17.5 trillion in debt and assert Wisconsinites should not worry about it because it is federal money.

“Wisconsin taxpayers are smarter than Citizen Action thinks, and they see this for what it is – political theatre.”

During the press conference, Citizen Action argued for the expansion of Medicaid – a multi-billion dollar program that does not improve health outcomes – because they do not want Wisconsin’s tax dollars sent to other states.

“It is a complete lie that there is a pot of money that will go to other states if Wisconsin does not accept the federal Medicaid expansion. Expanding Medicaid would only add billions to our massive federal debt and end up costing taxpayers in Wisconsin.

“Citizen Action spent Tax Day promoting more debt, bigger government, and increased spending hoping taxpayers wouldn’t notice the costs that will be passed on to them. Rather than try to pull a stunt, Citizen Action should just thank Wisconsin taxpayers for everything they do.”
