[Madison, Wisc…] The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has approved an exploratory drilling permit for Gogebic Taconite, LLC to create a new iron ore mine in the Penokee Hills in northern Wisconsin.

According to a press release from the DNR, “The company has proposed exploration in a four-mile area located east of Mellen in eastern Ashland and west-central Iron counties.”

Gogebic plans to drill eight exploratory holes in the area before they begin construction on a full mine. Their application and approval comes shortly after over two years of battling in the legislature for new mining legislation.
